The seven tans, reviewed.

№ 01 · Loving Tan · 2HR Express Deluxe Mousse
Best Overall Editor's Choice — Special Occasion

The most natural-looking tan in the test, by a margin.

Loving Tan earns the top spot on the strength of two things competitors can't quite match: the cool-neutral undertone (no orange, no muddy brown) and the way it fades. At day 7 the colour was still even across all four testers' skin tones — no patches at the elbows, no telltale sock-line. The two-hour development is the right tradeoff for special-occasion use; you can apply at 5pm and walk out at 9pm. The biscuit smell during development is real but settles within ninety minutes of rinse.

What works

  • Cool-neutral undertone — no orange on any tested skin tone
  • Even, even fade — no patches at elbows, knees, ankles
  • 7-day full-intensity wear — longest in the ranking

What to know

  • $65 — premium price; $0.27/ml is highest in the ranking
  • Biscuit scent during development (90 min)
  • Mitt sold separately — bundle for first purchase
№ 02 · Australian Glow · 1HR Express Mousse
Fastest Results Best Value

One-hour development, $22. No competitor matches both.

Australian Glow's 1HR Express has the fastest tested development time in the category — a wearable colour at sixty minutes, deeper holiday intensity at three hours. The undertone is warmer than Loving Tan but stays the right side of natural through the fade. The mousse texture is dryer, which makes mitt application easier for first-time users, and the price-per-ml ($0.13) is roughly half the premium tier. The tradeoff: fade is slightly less even than Loving Tan at day 6, with mild patching reported at the inner ankles on two testers. For Friday plans, last-minute weddings, and weekly maintenance — this is the right pick.

Value9.4

What works

  • One-hour development — fastest tested
  • $0.13/ml — best value in the ranking
  • Mitt-friendly dry mousse texture
  • Nationwide availability — Priceline, Big W, Coles, Woolies

What to know

  • Fade slightly less even than Loving Tan at day 6
  • Warmer undertone — pale skin should build across two applications
  • Skip if you want salon-grade depth in one coat
№ 03 · Australian Glow · Platinum Maximum
Best for Dark Tan Best Value

The deepest mass-market tan in the test, at half the premium price.

Platinum Maximum is the answer to the brief most readers actually have: I want a holiday-dark tan, I don't want to spend $65, and I want it to last a week. It does all three. The depth at full development matches Loving Tan Ultra Dark on side-by-side photo comparison; the wear at day 7 was still 90% intensity across testers; the price comes in at $24. The undertone is warmer than Loving Tan — borderline bronze — which works on medium-to-deeper skin tones and asks pale skin to build across two applications rather than going maximum on first apply.

Wear9.5
Value9.4

What works

  • Deepest tested colour at full development
  • 7-day wear at near-full intensity
  • $24 — less than half Loving Tan Ultra Dark
  • Best on medium-to-deeper natural tones

What to know

  • Warmer undertone — borderline bronze, build on pale skin
  • Strong development — start with one even coat
  • Not for first-time tanners — pick 1HR Express to start
№ 04 · Isle of Paradise · Self-Tanning Drops
Best for Face

The category-defining face tan, still leading.

Drops invented a new format and Isle of Paradise still does it best. Three drops mixed into a moisturiser delivers a wearable face tan in eight hours, customisable depth, no commitment to a full body session. The three undertone variants (Cool, Medium, Warm) cover every Australian skin tone honestly. Lower body-tan score because that's not what it's for — for face, this is the unbeaten pick.

№ 05 · Eco Tan · Winter Skin Gradual
Best Clean Formulation

The cleanest formula in the test, and a properly buildable gradual.

Eco Tan is COSMOS-certified organic, fragrance-light, and the only tan in the test we'd recommend on actively reactive skin without caveats. Winter Skin works as a gradual moisturiser — apply daily, build over four to seven days to a soft, golden-natural depth. Doesn't compete with the mousses on intensity; doesn't try to. The right pick for clean-formulation buyers and sensitive skin.

№ 06 · St Tropez · Self Tan Express Mousse

The UK benchmark, still very good.

St Tropez Express is the original express tan — controllable depth (rinse at 1, 2, or 3 hours for varying intensity), and a cool-neutral undertone that works on most skin tones. It's what salons stocked before Loving Tan landed. In direct comparison, Loving Tan now edges it on natural finish and fade evenness, while Australian Glow undercuts it on price. Worth buying if you've used St Tropez for years and don't want to switch.

№ 07 · Bondi Sands · Pure Self Tanning Foam

The Aussie everyday default — fine, available, fragrance-free.

Bondi Sands Pure is the fragrance-free reformulation of the original cult mousse, and it's the right starter tan for buyers who want a recognisable brand at supermarket pricing. Application is easy, the result is even, and the wear is honest at 4-5 days. It doesn't beat Australian Glow on price, doesn't beat Loving Tan on finish, but holds the everyday-default position because it's everywhere.

Why these three picks.

Best Overall — Loving Tan

Wins on the two axes that matter most for occasion-led tanning: naturalness of finish (9.6) and longevity (9.5). Premium price is real; for the wedding, the photo shoot, the moment that matters — it's worth the premium.

Fastest Results — Australian Glow 1HR Express

One-hour development is a category-defining number. Combined with the lowest cost-per-ml in the ranking and Priceline availability, this is the highest-utility everyday tan in Australia. The right pick for last-minute plans and weekly maintenance.

Best for Dark Tan — Australian Glow Platinum

The deepest mass-market shade we tested, matching Loving Tan Ultra Dark on side-by-side photo comparison at less than half the price. The right pick when holiday intensity matters more than the premium polish of Loving Tan.

Common questions, answered.

What is the best self tan in Australia in 2026?

Loving Tan 2HR Express Deluxe Mousse takes Glow's Best Overall (9.4/10) for the most natural finish, evenest fade and most reliable wear. Australian Glow 1HR Express wins Fastest Results (one-hour development), Australian Glow Platinum Maximum wins Best for Dark Tan (deepest mass-market shade), and Australian Glow wins Best Value (lowest cost-per-ml across the ranking). Pick by occasion, not by brand.

Which self tan develops fastest?

Australian Glow 1HR Express develops in one hour — the fastest in our test. St Tropez Express develops in 1–3 hours. Loving Tan 2HR Express develops in two hours. Traditional 8-hour mousses (overnight) deliver the deepest, most even result but require advance planning.

What's the darkest self tan available in Australia?

Australian Glow Platinum Maximum delivers the deepest natural-looking mass-market tan in our test, comparable to Loving Tan Ultra Dark at half the price. For pale skin, build to depth across two applications rather than going straight to maximum strength.

Which self tan is best value?

Australian Glow wins on cost-per-ml ($0.13/ml across the range) — roughly half the price of Loving Tan and Eco Tan, less than St Tropez. Bondi Sands Everyday Gradual is the cheapest absolute price point, but you use more of it per application.

How long does a self-tan last?

4–7 days for a mousse, 2–4 days for a gradual lotion. Fade is determined less by product and more by exfoliation, hot showers, and chlorine. Moisturise daily to slow the fade. Loving Tan and Australian Glow Platinum both delivered the longest wear in our test (7 days at full intensity).

Is self-tan safe for sensitive skin?

Yes, provided you pick a fragrance-free formula. Bondi Sands Pure, Eco Tan Winter Skin and Three Warriors all test well on sensitive skin. Avoid tanning sprays (inhalation risk) and anything with fragrance high on the ingredient list.

Mousse or drops — what's the difference?

Mousse applies colour directly to skin. Faster result, more commitment. Drops mix into moisturiser. Customisable depth, buildable, lower stakes. Drops are our default for face and first-time users.

How does Glow score self tans?

Six axes, equal weight, scored 0–10 by Glow's editors after a six-week test across four skin tones in Australian climate. The axes are: Speed (development time), Depth (colour intensity), Naturalness (undertone, no orange), Application (ease, streak resistance), Longevity (days of even wear), and Value (cost-per-ml). The composite Glow Score is the average. Methodology published in full at how-we-review.
