Cacao Tanning Oil
The algorithm hero. A bronzing body oil with low-DHA build, cocoa fragrance, and a packaging design that became category shorthand. AUD 38. If Bali Body has a one-product brief, this is it.

The Melbourne brand that turned self-tan into a fully-considered aesthetic — beach codes, executed end-to-end.
Cacao Tanning Oil is the algorithm darling. BB Cream Mousse is the entry. Coconut, cacao, tropics — Bali Body has the tightest brand world in Australian self-tan, and it built it without leaving DTC.
Laura Foley and David Oosterloo launched Bali Body in 2014. The brand started in Canggu, Bali, where the founders were living at the time, and was built out of Melbourne once they moved home. A single tanning oil. A strong opinion about what the bottle should look like. The bet was that Australian self-tan didn't have a formulation problem — it had an object-design problem.
That bet held. Cacao Tanning Oil became the algorithm hero — a body oil that smells like dessert and builds gradual bronze. BB Cream Mousse became the foolproof entry. The brand stayed independent, stayed founder-led, and kept distribution tight. DTC at balibodyco.com is still primary. MECCA stocks a curated set. Priceline carries a handful.
The trade-off: you pay a premium for the discipline. Bali Body sits above Bondi Sands and below Loving Tan on price. What you're buying is the brand world — the photography, the packaging, the scent codes — as much as the tan itself.
For most of the 2010s, self-tan bottles read like clinical hazard packaging — bold caps, neon greens, gym-bag colour palettes. Bali Body did the obvious thing nobody else had: it made the bottles look like something you'd actually want on your bathroom shelf. The product range came second to the brand world. The brand world is what built the cult.
The algorithm hero. A bronzing body oil with low-DHA build, cocoa fragrance, and a packaging design that became category shorthand. AUD 38. If Bali Body has a one-product brief, this is it.
The entry. AUD 38. Fast develop, light scent, foolproof application. The right first Bali Body buy for most — particularly anyone coming from Bondi Sands looking for a step up.
The low-commitment tan. AUD 35. Daily moisturiser with light DHA — colour that builds across a week, no streaks, no event window. For anyone who finds full self-tan too theatrical.
The mass-tier alternative. Half the price, double the distribution.
Finish-premium. If you want the deeper, more theatrical bronze.
The certified-natural alternative. Cleaner ingredient deck.
The drops format. Custom-strength via your existing moisturiser.
The salon classic. Heritage formulation, broad MECCA availability.
The mid-price independent. Solid mousse, lower brand-world spend.
Bali Body won on aesthetic. The brand world — packaging, scent, photography — is the strongest in Australian self-tan, and it was built without retail scale to compensate. Where Bondi Sands wins on distribution and Loving Tan wins on finish, Bali Body wins on object design and the cult of the cacao oil. Start with BB Cream Mousse. Buy the Cacao Oil second. Don't buy more than three products from any self-tan brand — including this one.

Bali Body is an Australian self-tan and body brand founded in 2014 by Laura Foley and David Oosterloo. Started in Canggu, Bali and built out of Melbourne as a DTC-first business. The brand stayed independent and founder-led, distributing primarily via balibodyco.com with limited MECCA and Priceline stock. Best known for Cacao Tanning Oil (~AUD 38) and BB Cream Self Tan Mousse (~AUD 38) — premium-mass pricing, between Bondi Sands and Loving Tan. The Glow editors' first recommendation: BB Cream Self Tan Mousse for the entry, Cacao Oil for the cult buy.
