Alpha-H Vitamin A Serum

Alpha-H's Vitamin A is the Aussie retinol with the best formula quality on the AU shelf. Encapsulated for overnight use, balanced for daily application, packaged in a pump that doesn't oxidise. The $79 price point is fair for what you get.

"I'd been buying the wrong self-tan for three years. I found Glow, followed the Best Self Tan ranking, and the third one I tried was the one. Saved me weeks of guessing."

How we chose

Every Glow ranking is scored against the five-axis rubric published in how we review. For skincare, performance carries 35% of the composite score, tolerability 25%, texture and application 15%, value 15%, and repurchase intent 10%. That last axis asks a blunt question: of the editors who tested a product, how many would buy it again with their own money?

Retinol sits under our actives protocol, the strictest one we run. That means a minimum eight-week test period, a 48-hour patch test on the inner forearm before anything touches a face, a daily log of usage, layering and irritation events, and photographs at week 0, week 4 and week 8 under controlled lighting. Each product is also cross-tested against at least one alternative in the same active class, which is how a $12 serum and an $89 treatment can be judged on the same table.

Not everything we test makes this page. Products that score below 6.5 are never published in rankings, and no brand can pay for a position. The three above are the ones that cleared the bar.

The ranking, up close

01 · Alpha-H Vitamin A Serum · 9.1/10 · $79

Alpha-H has been Australia's original acid brand since 1995, founded in Brisbane and still formulated and manufactured here. That pedigree shows in the details our texture and application axis rewards: the retinol is encapsulated for overnight use, balanced for daily application, and dispensed from a pump that keeps the formula from oxidising. At $79 it is not the cheap option, but it is the most complete one on the Australian shelf. Read our full Alpha-H review for the brand's wider lineup.

02 · The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane · 8.5/10 · $12

The retinol that democratised the active. The Ordinary names every product by its ingredient and percentage, keeps its formulas largely fragrance free, and prices actives close to cost, which is how a $12 serum ends up ranked beside clinical brands. This is a simple squalane base and a full 1% strength, so it suits users who have already built tolerance; start lower in the range and graduate up. One practical note from our brand review: the glass dropper packaging is not ideal for oxidation-prone actives, so buy it fresh and use it up.

03 · Paula's Choice 1% Retinol Treatment · 8.9/10 · $89

The strongest formulation work in the ranking. Paula's Choice encapsulates its 1% retinol and buffers it with peptides and licorice root extract, in a range that is genuinely fragrance free and essential-oil free. Our testing rates it a credible clinical-level treatment with measurable results within 12 weeks, the natural step for when The Ordinary has run its course. Read our full Paula's Choice review.

How to choose your strength

The right retinol is the one your skin can tolerate for months, not the strongest one you can buy. Our beginner's guide to retinol sets out the ladder: 0.025% for sensitive skin or first-time users, 0.05% once you have tolerated the lower strength for three months, and 0.1% or above for established users only. Both 1% products in this ranking sit at the top of that ladder.

Method matters as much as strength. Apply a pea-sized amount to fully dry skin, never damp, because damp skin amplifies penetration and irritation. Wait before moisturising, build from two nights a week towards nightly over about 12 weeks, and wear SPF every morning without exception. Then hold your nerve: texture improves at 4 to 6 weeks, but pigmentation and fine lines move at 12 to 16 weeks, and most people quit at week 6, just before the payoff.

Not sure you should be on retinol at all? If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, retinoids are off the table. If your barrier is compromised by active eczema or rosacea, fix the barrier first. Our guide to when to start using retinol covers the signals worth acting on, at any age.

Common questions

What percentage of retinol should I start with?

Start at 0.2-0.3% for sensitive skin, 0.5% for normal. Move up only after tolerating 2-3 weeks without irritation. Most 1% products are for experienced users.

Can I use retinol and vitamin C together?

Not ideally. Use vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night. Using both at once reduces efficacy and increases irritation risk.

How long does retinol take to work?

Visible changes in skin texture at 4-6 weeks. Deeper results (pigmentation, fine lines) at 12-16 weeks. Retinol is a long game.
