The Glow read.

James Read's positioning — tan as skincare, formulated by a celebrity tanning technician — was a smart category move when the brand launched in Australia in 2018. The H2O Tan Mist is genuinely innovative: a hyaluronic acid-based hydrating mist that delivers gradual face tan without the dry, tight feeling of mass-market face tans.

The Sleep Mask is a credible overnight gradual tan that doubles as a hydrating mask. The Coconut Melting Tan Foam is a competent body tan that won't outperform Bondi Sands Pure but suits buyers who want a more cosmetically elegant texture.

Pricing is premium ($55-95 across the range), which is fair for the category and the formulation but a stretch for buyers who already trust Bondi Sands at half the price. Buy James Read for face. Buy Bondi Sands for body. Buy Loving Tan if you want one brand for both.

What works

  • H2O Tan Mist — genuinely innovative hyaluronic-acid-based face tan
  • Sleep Mask — overnight gradual tan that doubles as hydrating mask
  • Texture and cosmetic elegance significantly above mass-market category average
  • Founder is a working celebrity tanning technician — credible expertise signal

What doesn't

  • Pricing premium ($55-95) is a stretch above Bondi Sands at the same job
  • Body Foam doesn't outperform Bondi Sands Pure
  • Brand recognition in Australia is concentrated in Mecca-shopper demographic
