Retinol in skincare.

Retinol is the over-the-counter form of vitamin A. It converts in two biological steps to retinoic acid (the active form), which is what binds to retinoid receptors in skin cells and drives the well-known retinoid effects. OTC retinol is available at concentrations from 0.025% (gentle) to 1% (high-strength). Retinaldehyde and granactive retinoid are next-generation alternatives.

What it does

Drives cell turnover. Supports collagen synthesis. Fades hyperpigmentation. Reduces fine lines and texture irregularity. Improves pore appearance. Treats some forms of acne. The single most evidence-backed anti-ageing topical available without prescription.

The evidence

Overwhelming. Multi-decade peer-reviewed clinical research, dermatologist consensus, and FDA-approved (in prescription-strength tretinoin form) for both photoageing and acne. The clinical evidence base for retinol exceeds almost any other consumer skincare active.

Who should use it

Most adults from late 20s onward, with consideration. Users with active rosacea, eczema, or compromised skin barriers should fix the barrier first. Pregnant or breastfeeding users should avoid retinoids entirely.

What it pairs with

Niacinamide (may reduce retinol irritation). Hyaluronic acid (hydration support during the introduction period). Peptides (different mechanism, complementary effect). Avoid pairing with AHAs, BHAs, or vitamin C in the same routine — use vitamin C AM, retinol PM.

What to buy in Australia

The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion — AU$15, the gentlest entry point. La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 Serum — AU$48, the pharmacy standard. Medik8 Crystal Retinal 6 — AU$95, the clinical-tier retinaldehyde for established users.

Frequently asked questions.

How do I introduce retinol without irritation?
Start two nights per week for two weeks. Build to three nights per week for two weeks. Alternate nights for two weeks. Then nightly. Pea-sized amount on dry skin, follow with moisturiser, use SPF every morning.
Can I use retinol every night?
Established users with tolerant skin can. Retinol-naive users should follow the gradual introduction protocol above before moving to nightly use.
How long until I see results from retinol?
Texture: 4–6 weeks. Tone: 8–12 weeks. Fine lines: 6+ months of consistent use. Anyone selling faster results is overpromising.
Is retinol safe in pregnancy?
No. All retinoids — including OTC retinol — are contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Use peptides as the alternative anti-ageing active during this period.
