The best anti-ageing skincare in Australia.

Anti-ageing is a category dominated by marketing claims. We ignored the marketing, looked at the active ingredients, and tested the seven products with the strongest formulation profiles available in Australia. Six weeks. Mixed skin types. The honest verdict.

Tested: April 2026 · The Glow editorial · 6-week test panel Editor: Jess Hartmann, Skincare Editor No paid placements

Anti-ageing skincare in 2026 is dominated by three evidence-backed active categories: retinoids (retinol, retinaldehyde, prescription tretinoin), peptides (signal peptides like Argireline, copper peptides, growth-factor mimics), and antioxidants (vitamin C, ferulic acid, niacinamide at high concentrations). Everything else — collagen-infused creams, plant-stem-cell extracts, exotic botanicals — is marketing. The seven products below all sit in those three evidence-backed categories at concentrations that produce visible change in 6–12 weeks of consistent use.

The ranking.

№ 01
Medik8

Crystal Retinal 6

Encapsulated retinaldehyde — the most bioavailable retinoid available without prescription. Crystal Retinal 6 is the recommended starting concentration for established retinol users. Visible texture and tone improvement in 6–8 weeks. The British clinical-skincare standard.

9.4/ 10 GLOW
№ 02
SkinCeuticals

C E Ferulic

The antioxidant serum that clinical dermatologists actually use under their own SPF in the morning. L-ascorbic acid at 15%, vitamin E, and ferulic acid in a stable, photoprotective formulation. Premium-priced ($230 for 30ml) and worth it for the antioxidant tier.

9.3/ 10 GLOW
№ 03
The Ordinary

Argireline Solution 10%

Argireline (acetyl hexapeptide-8) is the most-studied signal peptide in topical skincare. The Ordinary's 10% solution is the highest concentration available at consumer pricing. Visible expression-line softening in 4–6 weeks of consistent twice-daily use. Sub-$15.

8.9/ 10 GLOW
№ 04
Paula's Choice

10% Niacinamide Booster

Niacinamide at 10% — high enough to drive visible pore and tone improvement without the irritation that accompanies most actives at therapeutic concentrations. Pairs cleanly with retinoids and acids. The most-recommended booster serum in the category.

8.8/ 10 GLOW
№ 05
La Roche-Posay

Retinol B3 Serum

Pure retinol at a beginner-friendly concentration with niacinamide buffering. The pharmacy retinol that doesn't strip — well-tolerated in our six-week panel including two retinol-naive testers. Sub-$50.

8.6/ 10 GLOW
№ 06
Drunk Elephant

A-Passioni Retinol Cream

1% pure retinol in a vehicle that mitigates the typical retinol-irritation curve. Premium-priced ($95) and well-formulated, but does not outperform the Medik8 Crystal Retinal at a similar price tier.

8.4/ 10 GLOW
№ 07
Olay

Regenerist Retinol 24 Night

Mass-market retinol formulation at supermarket pricing. Genuinely competent for the price tier — niacinamide buffering, pleasant texture, well-tolerated. Not a category leader, but the strongest sub-$30 retinol in our testing.

How we tested.

Each product was bought at retail price during the testing window. Four testers (ages 32–58, mixed skin types) used each product daily — retinoids and peptides PM only, vitamin C AM only — for six to eight weeks. Photographs at week 0, 4, and 8. Scores aggregate across formulation depth, application performance, evidence base for the active concentration, value-for-money, and visible result at the end of testing. Frequently asked questions.

What's the best anti-ageing product in Australia?
Medik8 Crystal Retinal 6 if you're an established retinol user — encapsulated retinaldehyde at clinically meaningful concentrations. SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic if you're building the antioxidant tier of your routine. The Ordinary Argireline 10% if budget is the constraint. The 'best' product depends on which active category you're addressing.
When should I start using anti-ageing products?
Sunscreen daily from your teens. Antioxidants (vitamin C, niacinamide) from your mid-20s. Retinoids from late 20s if you have evidence-based concerns or from mid-30s as a preventative measure. Peptides at any age — they don't drive irritation.
Are retinol and retinoids the same thing?
Retinol is one specific retinoid. Other retinoids include retinaldehyde (faster-converting, more potent) and prescription-strength tretinoin (the strongest topical option). All are vitamin A derivatives that drive cell turnover. Retinaldehyde and tretinoin are more effective at lower concentrations than retinol.
Can I use vitamin C and retinol together?
Yes, but not at the same time of day. Use vitamin C in the AM under sunscreen for antioxidant protection. Use retinoids in the PM. They work on different mechanisms and combining them in the same routine across morning and night is the standard dermatologist recommendation.
Is The Ordinary actually as good as premium brands?
On single-active formulations, yes. The Ordinary's Argireline Solution 10%, Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, and Granactive Retinoid 5% are clinically credible at sub-$15 prices. On complex multi-active formulations and antioxidant systems, premium brands (SkinCeuticals, Medik8) outperform.
What anti-ageing products are TGA-restricted in Australia?
Prescription tretinoin requires a prescription from a doctor or via telehealth. Hydroquinone above 2% requires a prescription. All other anti-ageing actives discussed here are available over-the-counter at standard retail.
