How to Prevent Self-Tan Streaks
Self-tan streaks aren't formula-related — they're application-related. The method below eliminates them.
The short answer
If you only read one paragraph.
Exfoliate 24 hours before. Moisturise dry areas (knees, elbows, ankles) before tanning. Use a mitt. Apply in long sweeping strokes. Buff joints. Wait 8 hours before showering.
Step by step
The full method.
- Exfoliate 24 hours before. Body scrub + glycolic acid body lotion. Old skin cells absorb tan unevenly — they're the streak.
- Moisturise the night before. Hydrated skin tans evenly. Dry patches absorb more pigment.
- Don't shave the same day. Wait 24 hours after shaving. Freshly shaved skin develops dotted patterns from open follicles.
- Apply tan with a mitt, not hands. Mitt distributes evenly. Hand causes streaks and stains palms orange.
- Use long sweeping strokes. Cover each area in 3-4 sweeping motions, no scrubbing. Build coverage in two passes if needed.
- Buff joints (knees, elbows, ankles, knuckles). These absorb more tan than surrounding skin. Apply less here, then buff with a damp mitt.
- Wait 8 hours before showering. DHA needs 8 hours to develop fully. Showering at 4 hours = patchy fade.
- Sleep in dark loose cotton. Bronzer guide colour stains pillows and tight clothing. Loose dark cotton = no transfer.
Common mistakes
What to avoid.
- Skipping exfoliation (creates the streaks before you even apply).
- Applying with bare hands (streaks + orange palms).
- Showering too early (washes off bronzer before DHA develops).
- Wearing tight clothes after applying (creates lines and patches).
- Forgetting to buff joints (creates the classic dark-knee mistake).
Frequently asked
Common questions.
How long should I wait between coats?
8-12 hours minimum. The tan develops gradually — building too fast = patchy intense pigmentation.
Can I apply moisturiser over self-tan?
Yes, after the first shower (8+ hours after application). Moisturising daily extends tan from 4 days to 7-8.
My back is patchy — how do I apply alone?
Tan tag (a wide-strap applicator) for the back. Or apply in front of the bathroom mirror in a back-and-forth motion using a mitt.
Why is my tan splotchy 3 days later?
Insufficient exfoliation OR not enough moisturising as the tan develops. Spot-fix with tan eraser, then start the next round better.
