How to Prep Skin Before Foundation

Most foundation 'fails' are skin prep failures. The 5-minute routine below ensures foundation lasts, blends, and doesn't pill.

The short answer

If you only read one paragraph.

Cleanse, hydrate twice (toner + serum), moisturise, wait 60 seconds, apply SPF, wait 60 seconds, apply primer if needed, wait 60 seconds, foundation.

Step by step

The full method.

  1. Start with clean, dry skin. Cleanse twice if you wore SPF or makeup the day before.
  2. Apply hydrating toner or essence. Pat in. Damp skin holds foundation better than dry.
  3. Apply hyaluronic acid serum. Plumps skin, creates a smooth canvas.
  4. Moisturise generously. Pea-sized for face. Wait until fully absorbed.
  5. Wait 60 seconds, then SPF. Two finger-lengths. Wait another 60 seconds before next product.
  6. Apply primer only where needed. T-zone, around nose, on enlarged pores. Not the whole face — most foundations don't need it.
  7. Wait 60 seconds, then foundation. Patience is the unlock. Foundation pills when applied to undry skincare.
Common mistakes

What to avoid.

  • Skipping the wait between products (foundation pills).
  • Skipping moisturiser (foundation looks cakey on dry skin).
  • Heavy primer everywhere (creates separation lines).
  • Applying foundation immediately after SPF (lifts the SPF).
  • Cleansing aggressively right before makeup (irritated skin = patchy foundation).
Frequently asked

Common questions.

Why does my foundation pill on my skin?

Skincare hasn't absorbed fully, OR your skincare and makeup formulas aren't compatible. Try waiting longer between products, or switch to a different SPF/primer.

Do I need primer?

Most don't. If your foundation looks fine without it, primer adds friction without benefit. Use primer for: 12-hour wear, oily T-zones, large pores.

Should I exfoliate before makeup?

Not the same day. Exfoliated skin is too sensitive for foundation. Exfoliate the night before.

How long should I wait after skincare?

60 seconds between active products. 2-3 minutes before applying foundation. Patience prevents pilling.
