How to Double Cleanse — The K-Beauty Method

Double cleansing is the unlock for clients who wear SPF, makeup, or both. Single cleansing leaves residue that single-handedly causes most adult acne in clean-living routines.

The short answer

If you only read one paragraph.

Oil cleanser first (dissolves SPF and makeup) for 60 seconds. Rinse. Water-based cleanser second (removes residue and dirt) for another 60 seconds. Once-a-day in the evening.

Step by step

The full method.

  1. Apply oil cleanser to dry skin, dry hands. Water on either dilutes the oil and stops it from binding to your makeup and SPF.
  2. Massage for 60 seconds in circles. Most users rush this. The 60 seconds is what dissolves the SPF film and makeup.
  3. Add a small amount of warm water. Emulsifies the oil to a milky consistency.
  4. Rinse with warm water. Don't use hot water — strips the barrier.
  5. Apply water-based cleanser. Foaming, gel, or cream cleanser. Massage 60 seconds.
  6. Rinse and gently pat dry. Don't rub — friction causes inflammation.
  7. Move on to your skincare routine. Apply toner or first serum within 60 seconds while skin is still damp.
Common mistakes

What to avoid.

  • Doing it only once a day in morning (you don't need oil cleanse in the morning).
  • Skipping the 60-second oil massage (dissolves SPF that single cleansing can't).
  • Using cleansing wipes as a 'first cleanse' (they don't dissolve SPF).
  • Skipping the second cleanse after a heavy oil cleanser.
  • Using hot water (strips the barrier).
Frequently asked

Common questions.

Do I need to double cleanse if I don't wear makeup?

If you wear SPF, yes. Sunscreen films don't fully come off with a single water-based cleanser. Most acne in clean-routine clients traces to this gap.

Should I double cleanse every day?

Once a day in the evening. Morning cleanse is optional — water or single water-based cleanse is fine.

Best oil cleanser for sensitive skin?

Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil or DHC Deep Cleansing Oil. Avoid heavily fragranced options.

Will oil cleansing cause breakouts?

Most won't — the oil dissolves like-with-like. Avoid coconut, palm, or cocoa butter cleansers if you're acne-prone.
