How to Choose Foundation Shade — In-Store and Online
Most foundation mismatches happen because shade-testing is done indoors. The method below works in-store, online, and at home.
If you only read one paragraph.
Test on your jawline (not wrist). Check in natural daylight. Look for the shade that disappears, not blends. If between two shades, pick the cooler — most foundations oxidise warmer over the day.
The full method.
- Cleanse face and apply your usual moisturiser. Don't shade-match on bare skin. Foundation reads differently on hydrated vs dry skin.
- Test 3 shades in a row on your jaw. Lower jaw and upper neck — not wrist. Wrist is consistently 1-2 shades lighter than face.
- Step into natural daylight. In-store lights are warm and lie. Walk to a window or step outside.
- Pick the shade that disappears. Wait 5 minutes. The right shade vanishes; wrong shades show as a stripe.
- Wait for oxidation. Most foundations oxidise warmer (more orange) within 30 minutes. The right shade slightly cool when fresh = perfect after oxidation.
- Online: use Mac shade-finder or Fenty's match2body tool. Both have undertone diagnostic. More accurate than guessing from the bottle.
- Test in your home lighting. Bring home samples. The shade that works in store-light might not work in your bathroom.
What to avoid.
- Testing on the back of your hand (always 2 shades off).
- Not checking in natural light.
- Picking the warmer shade because 'I look pale' — most foundations oxidise warmer.
- Buying online without using a shade-finder tool.
- Forgetting that summer skin shifts 1-2 shades from winter skin.
Common questions.
Should I match my face or my neck?
Match the boundary — lower jaw to upper neck. Foundation that matches face but is darker than neck is the most common mismatch.
How do I tell my undertone?
Veins on inner wrist: blue/purple = cool; green = warm; both = neutral. Or test: gold jewellery flatters warm; silver flatters cool.
Best foundation finder online?
Fenty's match2body, Mac's shade-match, IL Makiage's quiz. All use selfies + algorithm to suggest a shade.
Do I need different foundations for summer and winter?
Most people need 2 shades — 1 for warmer months, 1 for cooler. Or buy a foundation drop and lighten/darken with concealer.
