The best gradual face tan.

Body-tan formulations on the face cause breakouts. These five are calibrated for facial skin — drops, mists, and tinted moisturisers built to layer.

Tested: April 2026 Editor: Glow editorial No paid placements

Face-tan is a separate problem from body-tan. The skin is thinner, more sebum-active, and more prone to clogged pores. The right format is drops mixed into your moisturiser, light tinted creams, or fine mists — never a heavy mousse. The premium category is small but mature.

How we tested.

Five testers (mixed skin types, all with combination-to-oily face skin) applied each product daily for four weeks. Tracked for breakout occurrence, colour buildup at maximum, undertone, and skin barrier disruption (TEWL measurements before/after).

Frequently asked questions.

Can I use body self-tan on my face?
We don't recommend it. Body formulations are typically more occlusive and use carriers that work on the body but trigger breakouts on facial skin. Use a face-specific product.
Will face tan cause breakouts?
Quality face tan calibrated as drops or water mist usually doesn't. Tinted creams and mousses can on acne-prone skin. The drops format above mixes into your existing moisturiser, so the comedogenic risk is determined by your moisturiser.
How often should I apply face tan?
Most people get the best result applying every other day. Daily application can build too dark; weekly is too sparse to maintain. Drop the dose to two drops per moisturiser layer for daily use.
Should I apply face tan before or after moisturiser?
Mix into your moisturiser. The drops format is designed for this. Don't apply drops alone to clean skin — the colour develops too fast and unevenly without the moisturiser as a buffer.
Can I wear makeup over face tan?
Yes, once the tan has fully developed (4-8 hours). Don't apply makeup over wet face-tan or you'll lift product onto your brushes.
Does face tan match my body tan?
Match the undertone, not just the brand. Cool body tan + cool face tan reads consistent. Mixing warm body with cool face is the most common reason face-and-body tan look mismatched.
Is face tan safe for the eye area?
Avoid the eyelids and the immediate orbital socket. Most face-tan products warn against eye contact. Apply to the cheeks, forehead, jawline, and neck — leave the eye area alone.
Can pregnant women use face tan?
Topical DHA is generally considered safe in pregnancy by Australian dermatologists, but always check with your obstetrician. Spray tan with inhaled DHA is more often advised against. Self-applied lotions with low-dose DHA are the lowest-risk format.
