How to Use Retinol — Glow's Beginner Guide

Retinol is the single best-evidenced anti-aging ingredient on the market. Used wrong, it ruins your barrier for six weeks. Used right, it's the routine multiplier of your decade.

The short answer

If you only read one paragraph.

Start at 0.025% three nights a week. Apply pea-sized to dry skin after cleansing. Buffer with moisturiser if reactive. Build to nightly over 12 weeks. Always wear SPF the next morning. Never on damp skin.

Step by step

The full method.

  1. Choose your starting strength. 0.025% for sensitive skin or first-time users. 0.05% if you've tolerated 0.025% for 3 months. 0.1%+ is for established users only.
  2. Cleanse and dry your face fully. Apply retinol to dry skin, not damp. Damp skin amplifies retinol penetration and triggers irritation.
  3. Apply pea-sized for whole face. More is not better — 80% of irritation cases trace to over-application. Spread thin and even.
  4. Wait 10 minutes before moisturising. Lets the retinol absorb. Moisturising immediately after dilutes the active and reduces effectiveness.
  5. Apply moisturiser as a buffer. Hydrating moisturiser supports the barrier through retinisation. Cetaphil Restorative Cream is the dermatologist default.
  6. Wear SPF 50 the next morning. Retinol increases UV sensitivity. SPF is non-negotiable — without it, retinol creates more pigmentation than it removes.
  7. Build frequency over 12 weeks. Week 1-2: 2 nights. Week 3-4: 3 nights. Week 5-8: alternate nights. Week 9+: nightly if tolerated.
Common mistakes

What to avoid.

  • Applying to damp skin (amplifies irritation by 3x).
  • Pairing with vitamin C in the same routine (one in AM, one in PM).
  • Stacking with chemical exfoliants on the same night (causes barrier breakdown).
  • Skipping SPF the next morning (creates worse pigmentation than retinol fixes).
  • Stopping at week 6 because results haven't shown (most visible improvement is at week 12-16).
Frequently asked

Common questions.

How long until I see retinol results?

Visible fine-line softening at 12-16 weeks. Texture improvement at 6-8 weeks. Pigmentation fade at 16-24 weeks. Most people quit at week 6, just before payoff.

Can I use retinol while pregnant?

No. Retinoids cross placenta and have teratogenic risk. Switch to bakuchiol (a plant-derived alternative) or peptides during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What's the difference between retinol and tretinoin?

Tretinoin is the active form; retinol converts in skin. Tretinoin works faster but is harder to tolerate. Both deliver the same end results at correct dosing.

Should I use retinol every night?

Eventually. Start 2-3 nights weekly, build over 12 weeks. Daily-from-day-one is the most common reason people abandon retinol.
