What Is Bakuchiol? — The Plant Retinol Alternative

Bakuchiol is a plant-derived molecule from the babchi seed, marketed as a 'retinol alternative'. Some evidence supports the claim.

What it is

The science.

Bakuchiol is extracted from Psoralea corylifolia (babchi). Despite chemical differences from retinol, it's been shown to upregulate similar collagen-synthesis genes.

How it works

Bakuchiol activates similar cellular pathways as retinol but through different receptor binding. It's photo-stable and doesn't increase UV sensitivity (unlike retinol).

Who should use it

Right for which skin types?

Pregnant or breastfeeding women. Sensitive skin clients reactive to retinol. Daytime users who don't want photo-sensitivity.

How to use it

0.5-1% concentration, twice daily. Compatible with morning routines (unlike retinol).

Side effects

Rare. Generally well-tolerated.

Frequently asked

Common questions.

Is bakuchiol as effective as retinol?

Studies show comparable effects on fine lines and pigmentation, but slower. Retinol is still better-evidenced.

Can I use bakuchiol while pregnant?

Yes — it doesn't have retinol's teratogenic risk.

Bakuchiol with vitamin C?

Yes, layers fine. Both are photo-stable.
