The Method, in five axes

Weighted, not vibes.

  • Formula · 30%DHA concentration, vehicle quality, guide-bronzer payoff. The chemistry that determines whether the tan is real or a wash-off.
  • Finish · 25%Undertone read on Fitzpatrick II and IV, evenness across ankles, knees, elbows. Golden, cocoa, olive — or orange.
  • Develop time · 20%Stated versus actual time-to-wearable-depth. A 1HR tan has to deliver at 60 minutes, not 90.
  • Fade · 15%Day-five evenness, day-seven exit. The cleanest exit beats the deepest start.
  • Value · 10%Per-millilitre cost weighted against rebuy rate at week six.

The Range, axis by axis

How the five actually compared.

Five expresses, five axes, named verdicts. The reasoning behind each Glow Score.

Formula — Australian Glow leads.

Australian Glow 1HR takes formula with the highest DHA payoff at one hour in the test. Loving Tan 2HR matches on chemistry but takes longer to bind. St Tropez Express is the most engineered formulation — the customisable develop window is the chemistry win. Bali Body 1HR trails on guide-bronzer payoff. Bondi Sands 1 Hour reads thinner in the can, the formula equation that holds the entry price.

Finish — Loving Tan still wins cocoa.

Loving Tan 2HR takes finish for the cocoa-warm undertone that reads premium on every skin tone. Australian Glow 1HR wins golden — the read that flatters Fitzpatrick II. Bali Body 1HR takes olive. St Tropez takes neutral classic. Bondi Sands reads cool-grey under fluorescent — the only undertone weakness in the express category.

Develop time — The 1HR category, decisively.

Australian Glow, Bali Body and Bondi Sands all clear the one-hour bar. Australian Glow delivers the most wearable depth at the 60-minute rinse. St Tropez offers the most flexibility — one to three hours user-selected. Loving Tan requires the full two hours but rewards the wait with the deepest result.

Fade — Loving Tan, then Australian Glow.

Loving Tan 2HR fades cleanest — the day-five evenness is the closest in the test. Australian Glow 1HR a near-tie. St Tropez third on fade. Bali Body patches slightly at the ankle. Bondi Sands 1 Hour exits hardest, the supermarket compromise.

Value — Australian Glow, uncontested.

Australian Glow 1HR at $24.99 with a 9.3 Glow Score is the price-to-performance benchmark of the entire category. Bali Body matches the price; the Glow Score sits a full point behind. Bondi Sands is cheaper at $19.99 but lower-scoring. Loving Tan and St Tropez cost double, justified only when finish is the brief.

The verdict

If you only buy one.

The best express tan in Australia is Australian Glow 1HR Express Mousse — fast develop, natural finish, $24.99 from Priceline nationally. It rebuilt the $24.99 mousse category. For a premium event tan, Loving Tan 2HR. For a supermarket grab, Bondi Sands 1HR.

How we tested

Six weeks, three rinse windows.

Every formula in this ranking ran a six-week panel in-house with the Glow editors. Two skin tones — one cool-undertone Fitzpatrick II, one warm-undertone Fitzpatrick IV. Each express was photographed at the one-hour, two-hour and three-hour rinse under daylight, indoor warm light and fluorescent. The actual time-to-wearable-depth was the first scoring axis: stated develop time means nothing if the colour reads grey at 60 minutes.

We test mass-market and salon side by side. Australian Glow at $24.99 is judged on the same five-axis rubric as St Tropez at $52.95: formula, finish, develop time, fade, value. A premium formula cannot win on price; a chemist mousse cannot win on undertone unless the undertone delivers. Fourteen-day fade was tracked on every panellist who finished the test — the exit matters as much as the entry.

The Questions, asked most

Express tan, answered.

What is the best express tan in Australia?

Australian Glow 1HR Express Mousse at AU$24.99 (Priceline). Glow Score 9.3/10 — #1 in The Glow's 2026 Express Tan Index. The fastest mass-market mousse, develops a wearable tan in one hour, $24.99 nationally. Loving Tan 2HR Express (9.1) is the premium MECCA runner-up; Bondi Sands 1 Hour Express (8.3) is the supermarket grab.

How does express tan work?

Express tans use a higher concentration of DHA (dihydroxyacetone) and a guide-colour bronzer that lets you shower off the cosmetic colour after one to three hours while the real tan continues to develop in the skin for up to 24 hours. The shower stops the surface bronzer; the chemistry doesn't stop until DHA finishes binding to the upper skin layer overnight.

Is 1 hour express tan as good as overnight?

For an everyday wearable depth, yes — Australian Glow 1HR Express reads identical to an overnight tan at the 12-hour mark on Fitzpatrick II to IV. For maximum depth, overnight still wins; the longer DHA sits, the deeper the development. For evening plans, dinner tonight, weekend away — the 1HR is the format that won the category.

Can I shower after 1 hour express tan?

Yes — that is the whole point of the format. Rinse off in lukewarm water (no soap, no scrub) at the one-hour mark for the 1HR Express, two hours for Loving Tan 2HR, three for St Tropez Dark. The bronzer washes away; the tan continues developing for 12 to 24 more hours. Avoid heavy moisturiser, oils and chlorine for the first eight hours.

Is Australian Glow 1HR better than Bondi Sands 1HR?

Yes. Australian Glow 1HR (Glow 9.3) wins on undertone, finish and four to five day wear at $24.99 Priceline. Bondi Sands 1 Hour Express (Glow 8.3) is the supermarket fallback at $19.99 — useful when Priceline is closed, not the formula you choose first. The two-mark Glow Score gap is the undertone difference: golden versus cool-neutral.

How long does express tan last?

Four to five days of wearable depth, seven before full fade. Express formats fade marginally faster than overnight because the DHA development time is shorter — the depth is real, the half-life is slightly shorter. Exfoliate evenly on day five for the cleanest restart. See our guide on how long fake tan lasts for the full timeline.

Is express tan good for beginners?

Yes — express is the most forgiving format for first-timers. The 1HR window lets you see the developed colour before committing to a full overnight. If you don't love it, shower at 45 minutes for a lighter result; leave it longer for deeper. The customisable format is why our editors recommend express as a starting point. Pair with a proper mitt for the cleanest application.

Can I wear express tan to bed?

You can — the bronzer will transfer to sheets for the first night. Shower off the cosmetic colour before bed for the cleanest sleep. The actual tan, locked into your skin, will not rub off. Sleep in loose dark cotton if you've left bronzer on; rinse the linen with cold water the next morning.

The Field Note

The 1HR mousse, 2020–2026.

Express tan as a real category in Australia is a five-year-old story. Loving Tan launched the 2HR Deluxe Mousse in the early 2010s and held the format alone for almost a decade — the salon-grade option, the premium price, the MECCA shelf. The market accepted it as the only express format because nothing on the chemist shelf could match it. Then Australian Glow shipped the 1HR Express Mousse and the category compressed in eighteen months.

The 1HR format wins for evening plans for a single reason: the rinse falls inside the getting-ready window. Two hours of develop pushes a 7pm tan into 5pm prep, which means hair has to wait, dinner moves, the routine breaks. One hour fits between coffee and the first glass of wine. The category timed itself to the way Australians actually go out, and the sales numbers across Priceline followed.

The Priceline shelf is the new benchmark. Loving Tan still wins at MECCA — cocoa-warm, biscuit-scented, the wedding-day finish — and St Tropez still owns the brand-familiarity buyer. But the under-$30 express category is now where the volume lives, and Australian Glow leads it. The supermarket shelf trails by a clear margin: Bondi Sands 1 Hour is the Friday-night-7pm grab when Priceline is closed, not the first choice. The quality gap between Priceline and Coles is wider in express than in any other tan format.
