Laneige Water Bank: the hydration verdict.

The Korean hydration benchmark. Six weeks across two skin types. Verdict: it earns its place in the hydration tier — and it's worth the premium for compromised barrier skin.

Score: 9.0/10 Brand: Laneige Product: Water Bank Hydro Cream No paid placements

What it is.

Laneige's flagship hydration moisturiser. Mineral-rich water-based formulation with the brand's proprietary Hydro Ionized Mineral Water and panthenol. Comes in two textures — Hydro Cream (for normal-to-dry) and Gel Cream (for combination-to-oily).

What it does.

Builds and maintains skin hydration over 24 hours. Reduces TEWL meaningfully across 2-3 weeks of daily use. Particularly effective on dehydrated skin — skin that's not naturally dry but has lost surface water content from over-cleansing, climate, or aggressive actives.

What it doesn't do.

Doesn't replace a serum. Doesn't fix structural skin issues — fine lines, pigmentation, acne. It's a hydration tool, not a multi-active product. Use it after your serum, before SPF in the morning.

"After three weeks my skin stopped feeling tight by 4pm. That alone is worth $65."— Aisha Vyas, Skincare Editor

The premium question.

$65 for Korean moisturiser is premium. Cheaper alternatives exist (CeraVe Moisturising Cream at $20) and work well for many people. The case for Laneige: meaningfully more elegant texture, better hydration over 24 hours, faster barrier improvement on dehydrated skin. The case against: if simple ceramide moisturisers work for you, the premium is unnecessary.

What works

  • Genuine 24-hour hydration
  • Visible barrier improvement in 2-3 weeks
  • Layers well under makeup and SPF
  • Two formulations for different skin types
  • No fragrance in current formulation

What to know

  • Premium-priced for K-beauty ($65)
  • Not necessary if simple ceramide moisturisers work for you
  • Cream version too occlusive for oily skin (use Gel)
  • Plastic packaging not the most sustainable

Frequently asked questions.

Is Laneige Water Bank worth $65?
For dehydrated or compromised barrier skin: yes. The barrier rebuild is meaningful over 2-3 weeks. For naturally well-hydrated skin: a $20 ceramide moisturiser does most of what this does.
Cream or Gel — which Water Bank?
Cream for dry/normal skin. Gel for combination/oily skin. Cream is too occlusive for oily skin types and can cause clogging.
How long does the bottle last?
3-4 months at daily AM and PM use on face and neck.
Can I use it with retinol?
Yes — apply after retinol has absorbed. It buffers retinoid irritation and supports barrier recovery between retinol applications.
Is it good for sensitive skin?
The current formulation is fragrance-free and well-tolerated by most sensitive skin. Patch-test if you have severe rosacea or eczema.
Where can I buy it in Australia?
Mecca, Adore Beauty, Sephora AU, David Jones. Mecca is often the cheapest with the most reliable stock.
Laneige vs CeraVe?
Different categories. Laneige is premium hydration; CeraVe is essentials barrier care. CeraVe handles barrier basics; Laneige handles barrier basics plus elegant texture and faster results.
