The Korean skincare routine.
The 10-step routine is dead. Modern K-beauty has settled on five — cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser, SPF. Here's what each step does and the products that work.
Korean skincare evolved past the 10-step era. Modern K-beauty (post-2023) has settled on a 5-step routine that mirrors evidence-based Western skincare with K-beauty actives. The principle: layer thinnest to thickest, hydrating to occlusive, water-based to oil-based.
The steps.
Step 1. Cleanser (or double-cleanse if wearing SPF/makeup)
Oil-based balm cleanser first to dissolve sunscreen and makeup; gel or foam cleanser second to remove residue. Beauty of Joseon Radiance Cleansing Balm + COSRX Low pH Good Morning Cleanser is the gold-standard pairing. Skip the first cleanse on bare-skin days.
Step 2. Toner — hydrating, not astringent
Korean toners hydrate; they don't strip. Pat 1-2 layers into damp skin. Anua Heartleaf 77% for reactive skin; Round Lab 1025 Dokdo for combination. Skip if you have very oily skin and prefer a shorter routine.
Step 3. Serum — the targeted active layer
One or two serums max. Hydrating serum (COSRX Snail 96) under a targeted serum (niacinamide, vitamin C, propolis). Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum is the most universally-tolerated K-beauty serum.
Step 4. Moisturiser
Hydration plus barrier. Laneige Water Bank for premium; Innisfree Green Tea Seed for daily. Match texture to skin type — gel for oily, cream for dry.
Step 5. SPF (morning only)
Two finger-lengths of Korean or Australian SPF50+. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun is the cosmetic gold standard. Skip at night.
Optional steps that help.
Sheet mask 1-2 times per week — the K-beauty original. Apply for 15-20 minutes after toner, pat in residual essence. Eye cream if you have specific eye-area concerns; otherwise skip and use the same moisturiser around eyes. Sleeping mask instead of moisturiser one or two nights per week for hydration boost (Laneige Water Sleeping Mask).
What to skip.
The 7-skin method (seven layers of toner) — excessive for most skin. Essence-emulsion-serum separation — modern serums combine these functions. Aggressive acid toners daily (Some By Mi Miracle Toner more than 3x/week). Multiple actives in one routine beyond hydration + one targeted active.
Frequently asked questions.
- How many steps should a Korean routine have?
- Five. Cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser, SPF (AM only). The 10-step routine was a 2015-2018 marketing concept that doesn't reflect how modern Korean skincare is actually used.
- Do I need both essence and serum?
- No. Modern formulations combine both functions. Essence-and-serum separation is dated K-beauty marketing.
- AM vs PM Korean routine — what's different?
- AM ends with SPF. PM skips SPF. PM can include retinol or stronger actives. AM should be gentler — hydration, niacinamide, sunscreen.
- Can I do the routine without a toner?
- Yes. Toner is optional in modern K-beauty. Skip if you have a hydrating serum and want a shorter routine.
- Should I sheet mask every day?
- 1-2 times per week is plenty. Daily masking provides diminishing returns and can over-hydrate skin.
- How long until I see results?
- Hydration improvements: immediate. Barrier rebuild: 2-3 weeks. Pigmentation or fine line changes: 8-12 weeks of consistent use.
- Can I mix Korean and Western products?
- Yes. Most chemistry is compatible. Common pairings: COSRX Snail 96 with Western retinol; Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum with Western vitamin C. Avoid combining Korean acid toners with Western retinol the same night.
- What's the most important step?
- SPF. Every other step matters less than daily SPF. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun makes this easy because the cosmetic experience is excellent.
