Isle of Paradise: the face-tan benchmark.
The drops format that defined modern face-tanning. Six weeks across the full Isle of Paradise range. Verdict: the Drops are the best face-tan on the Australian shelf. The body line is fine but not category-leading.
What it is.
UK-founded brand built around the drops format — concentrated DHA in a nourishing oil base that mixes into your existing moisturiser. Sold widely in Australia at Mecca and Adore. The drops format is now widely copied (Tan-Luxe, Bondi Sands Pure Concentrate Drops) but Isle of Paradise still leads on naturalness of finish.
What we tested.
Six weeks with the Self-Tanning Drops in Light, Medium, and Dark; the Self-Tanning Mousse; and the Body Butter Gradual Tan. Two testers per skin tone (Type I/II and Type III/IV). Daily application at maintenance dose, weekly at full dose.
The Drops.
The category leader. Mix three drops into your moisturiser for face, more for body. The carrier oil is lightweight and absorbs quickly; no greasy residue. Develops in 4-8 hours. Build over days — applying nightly produces a deeper tan by day three than a single heavy application. The Medium shade reads cool-neutral and works on most Australian skin. Light is for Type I; Dark for Type III+ skin tones who want more depth fast.
"The Drops are the only face-tan I trust on camera. Nothing else gets to a natural-looking depth without a giveaway sheen or shift to orange."— Hannah Pham, Senior Tan Editor
The body line.
The Self-Tanning Mousse is fine. Develops in similar time to mass-market alternatives. Slightly warmer undertone than the drops. Reads less natural than Loving Tan on body application — the brand's body line is the second-tier product compared to its drops innovation.
The Body Butter.
Gradual-build moisturiser format. Good for daily upkeep between full applications. Slow develop, forgiving of mistakes, doesn't compete with drops on intensity but useful for maintenance.

Frequently asked questions.
- Are Isle of Paradise Drops worth it?
- For face: yes, they're the best face-tan on the Australian shelf. For body: marginal — Loving Tan does body better at the same price. Buy Drops for face, buy a different brand for body.
- Which Isle of Paradise Drops shade should I buy?
- Medium for most Australian skin tones — neutral-cool undertone, builds across days. Light for Type I (very fair). Dark for Type III/IV (medium-to-deep) who want faster depth. Don't buy Dark on Type I skin; the result reads orange.
- How many drops should I use?
- Face: three drops in your moisturiser, applied daily for build. Body: ten drops in body lotion for gradual full-body. Adjust by the depth you want — more drops = deeper tan.
- Can I use Isle of Paradise Drops on body?
- Yes. The drops scale up — ten drops in body lotion produces a meaningful body tan. But the cost-per-application is higher than dedicated body mousses, and the build is slow. Use drops for face primarily.
- Is Isle of Paradise good for sensitive skin?
- The Sensitive variant of the drops is. The standard formulation contains low-level fragrance. Patch-test if you have rosacea or eczema. Bondi Sands Pure Concentrate Drops are a fragrance-free alternative at half the price.
- How long do Isle of Paradise Drops last?
- On face at maintenance dose: 5-7 days before colour visibly fades. On body at full application: 6-8 days. Drops fade slightly faster than dedicated mousses because the DHA layer is thinner.
- Is Isle of Paradise Australian?
- No, UK-founded. Sold widely in Australia at Mecca and Adore Beauty.
- Does Isle of Paradise stain sheets?
- Less than mousse formats — the carrier oil dries faster. Wait 10 minutes after application before bed and the stain risk is minimal.
