Is self-tan safe in pregnancy?

DHA-based topical self-tanners are considered safe in pregnancy by most dermatological authorities. Here's the current guidance, what to avoid, and the specific formulas recommended.

Always check with your obstetrician before introducing any new product during pregnancy. This guide summarises the current medical consensus as of 2026 but does not substitute for personal medical advice.

The short answer: topical DHA self-tan is considered safe for use during pregnancy. The longer answer involves which formats to prefer, which to avoid, and which ingredients to check for.

The method

01.

Topical DHA tan — considered safe

DHA (dihydroxyacetone) works on the outermost layer of skin only. It does not penetrate into the bloodstream in any meaningful quantity.

Mousses, gradual lotions, and drops applied to skin are all considered safe. The Royal College of Obstetricians states DHA self-tan 'is unlikely to pose a risk' to a developing fetus.

02.

Avoid spray tan booths

Spray tanning creates an aerosolised cloud of DHA which can be inhaled. Inhalation safety during pregnancy has not been established.

Avoid spray tan booths entirely during pregnancy. Mousse, drops, and gradual — all fine.

03.

Choose fragrance-free

Many pregnant women become more sensitive to scent. Fragrance in tan formulas (including essential oils) can cause nausea.

Bondi Sands Pure and Eco Tan Winter Skin are both fragrance-free and pregnancy-safe.

04.

Watch for skin changes

Pregnancy changes skin sensitivity and pigmentation. A tan formula that suited you pre-pregnancy may react differently now.

Patch-test every new product on a small area 24 hours before full application.

Common questions

Is DHA absorbed into the bloodstream?

No, in any meaningful quantity. DHA reacts with amino acids in the very top layer of skin (stratum corneum) and does not penetrate systemically when applied topically.

Can I use self-tan while breastfeeding?

Yes, the same guidance applies. Avoid applying directly to the breast or chest to prevent transfer during feeding.

Are 'organic' tans safer in pregnancy?

Not inherently. Organic certification is about ingredient sourcing, not pregnancy safety. The DHA mechanism is the same. Eco Tan Winter Skin is both organic and pregnancy-safe.
