How to Layer Skincare — The Order That Actually Works
Skincare layering isn't theatre. The wrong order means actives don't penetrate, moisturisers don't seal, and SPF doesn't protect.
If you only read one paragraph.
Cleanser → toner → essence → serum (lightest to heaviest) → eye cream → moisturiser → face oil → SPF (morning only). Wait 60 seconds between actives so each absorbs.
The full method.
- Cleanse twice if you wear makeup or SPF. Oil cleanser first (dissolves makeup and SPF), water-based cleanser second (removes the residue). Once is fine without makeup.
- Apply toner or essence on damp skin. Pat in with hands, not cotton pads. Cotton wastes 60% of the product.
- Apply lightest serum first. Watery serums (HA, niacinamide) before thick ones (retinol, peptides). Thicker products block thinner ones.
- Wait 60 seconds between actives. Acids and retinol especially need to absorb. Layering immediately dilutes the active.
- Eye cream before moisturiser. Eye-area skin is thinner. Heavy moisturiser on it pulls the eye area down.
- Moisturiser locks everything in. Pea-sized for the whole face. Apply to damp skin for better absorption.
- Face oil last (PM only). Oil is the largest molecule — nothing penetrates through it. Reverse only if your skin is so dry it needs occlusion under hydrators.
- SPF over moisturiser (AM only). SPF is treatment, not skincare. Always last. Two finger-lengths for the face.
What to avoid.
- Toner over serum (the toner washes the serum off).
- Oil before moisturiser (moisturiser can't penetrate through oil).
- SPF under moisturiser (moisturiser disrupts the SPF film).
- Stacking 4+ actives in one routine (more isn't better — barrier breakdown follows).
- Skipping the 60-second wait between actives.
Common questions.
How many products do I actually need?
Cleanser, moisturiser, SPF, plus one or two actives is the minimum effective routine. Most users over-buy and under-use.
Should I use the same routine morning and night?
No. Morning routine focuses on protection (vitamin C, SPF). Night focuses on repair (retinol, peptides). Don't double-up actives across both.
How long should I wait between products?
60 seconds is the rule of thumb. Acids and retinol need longer (5+ minutes if your skin is sensitive).
Can I skip toner if I use a serum?
Yes. Most modern toners are skippable. Exfoliating toners (like P50) earn their place; hydrating toners often don't.
