How to Fix Orange Self-Tan

Orange self-tan is preventable, but if you've already applied — there are three escape paths. The right one depends on how bad it is.

The short answer

If you only read one paragraph.

Mild orange (warm undertone, even): wait 24 hours, exfoliate gently. Medium orange (warm, patchy): use a tan eraser mousse. Severe orange: scrub vigorously, wait 48 hours, restart with a cooler-toned formula.

Step by step

The full method.

  1. Stop and assess. Check the entire body in good light. Decide: warm-but-even (fixable later), patchy (needs partial removal), or full-orange (full reset).
  2. Wait 6 hours minimum if just applied. DHA continues developing for 6+ hours. The tan you have at hour 2 is half what you'll have at hour 8.
  3. Use tan eraser mousse for partial fixes. Bondi Sands Tan Eraser. Apply, leave 5-10 minutes, shower off. Removes 60-80% of tan in one application.
  4. Exfoliate thoroughly for full reset. Body scrub + glycolic acid body lotion. Repeat 2× daily for 48 hours.
  5. Use a cooler-toned formula next time. St. Tropez and Tan-Luxe lean cooler. Loving Tan and Bondi Sands lean warmer. Choose by your skin's natural undertone.
  6. Shower with hot water. Hot water accelerates tan fade. Cooler showers slow it down.
  7. Moisturise generously. Dry patches show orange faster than hydrated skin.
Common mistakes

What to avoid.

  • Trying to wash it off immediately with soap (DHA is below skin surface — won't come out with soap).
  • Applying more tan over patchy orange (compounds the problem).
  • Using a body scrub the morning after (removes barrier without fixing tone).
  • Skipping pre-tan prep (most orange tans trace back to inadequate exfoliation before applying).
Frequently asked

Common questions.

Why does my self-tan turn orange?

Either: (1) the formula doesn't suit your undertone (warm formula on cool skin), (2) you applied too much, (3) you didn't exfoliate properly, (4) you applied to too-dry skin.

How do I prevent orange tan in the first place?

Exfoliate 24 hours before. Moisturise dry areas (knees, ankles, elbows) before tan. Use a mitt. Apply less than you think you need. Build in two coats over 24 hours.

Can I use makeup to fix orange face tan?

A green-based colour corrector neutralises orange. Apply under foundation. Buys you a day while the tan fades.

How long does it take for orange tan to fade?

5-7 days normal fade. 2-3 days with daily exfoliation.
