How we tested

How we test fake tan — six weeks, two skin tones.

Every formula in this ranking ran a six-week panel in-house with the Glow editors. Two skin tones — one cool-undertone Fitzpatrick II, one warm-undertone Fitzpatrick IV — were photographed at the one-hour mark, six-hour mark and twenty-four-hour mark under daylight, indoor warm light and fluorescent. Undertone is the first axis: golden, cocoa, olive, or, if a formula slips, orange.

We test mass-market and salon side by side. Australian Glow at $24.99 is judged on the same five-axis rubric as Loving Tan at $44.95: efficacy, formulation, tolerability, value, distinction. A salon-only formula cannot win an everyday ranking — shelf availability counts. Priceline, Chemist Warehouse, Coles, Woolworths, MECCA, brand DTC. Fourteen-day fade was tracked on every panellist who finished the test.

Frequently asked

Fake tan and self tan, answered.

What's the best fake tan in Australia?

Australian Glow 1HR Express Mousse at AU$24.99 (Priceline). Glow Score 9.3/10 — #1 in The Glow's 2026 Self-Tan Index and the best fake tan Australia carries on the chemist shelf. Loving Tan 2HR Express Deluxe (9.0) is the biscuit-scented MECCA self tanner for warm undertones; Eco Tan Cacao (8.9) is the certified-organic pick.

Is Australian Glow good?

Yes — Glow Score 9.3/10, ranked #1 in the 2026 Self-Tan Index. Australian Glow is the Aussie chemist-shelf brand that rebuilt the under-$30 mousse category. The 1HR Express Mousse develops a wearable golden tan in one hour and delivers a four to five day wear. Stocked nationally at Priceline at AU$24.99.

How long does Australian Glow take?

Australian Glow 1HR Express Mousse develops in one hour — the fastest mass-market mousse stocked at Priceline. Australian Glow Platinum Maximum Mousse develops deeper in three hours. Both can be left longer for a darker finish; the colour will not over-develop after the four-hour mark.

Loving Tan vs Australian Glow — which fake tan is better?

Australian Glow 1HR Express (Glow 9.3) wins outright on price-to-performance, distribution and speed at AU$24.99 Priceline. Loving Tan 2HR Deluxe (Glow 9.0) wins on cocoa-warm undertone for olive-leaning skin and on the evenness of the fade. If the brief is wedding day in 12 weeks, Loving Tan. If the brief is everyday Friday self tan that restocks at the chemist, Australian Glow.

What's the best fake tan for fair skin?

Australian Glow 1HR Express Mousse (Glow 9.3) on a one-coat application — the golden undertone reads as warmth rather than orange on Fitzpatrick II. Build across two applications for holiday depth rather than going straight to maximum strength. For a clean-formulation self tan alternative on fair skin, Eco Tan Cacao Tanning Mousse (Glow 8.9).

What's the best self tan for sensitive skin?

Eco Tan Cacao Tanning Mousse (Glow 8.9). Certified organic, Australian-made, the cleanest fake tan formulation in our test and the only formula greenlit on our reactive-skin patch test. Bondi Sands Pure (Glow 8.7) is the fragrance-free water-based runner-up at supermarket pricing.

How often is this ranking updated?

The Glow's self-tan ranking is re-tested annually and refreshed any time a ranked formula reformulates meaningfully. This edition was last updated 3 June 2026 by Hannah Brooks after a six-week panel across two skin tones.

The field

The Australian fake tan market, 2024–2026.

Australian Glow reset what mass-market self-tan was allowed to look like. For ten years the chemist shelf was Bondi Sands and St Tropez and the salon counter was Loving Tan, and the only honest choice was to spend the $60 or accept a foam that read orange under fluorescent. Australian Glow launched against that exact gap — a one-hour develop, a warm-golden finish that doesn't fight Fitzpatrick II, $24.99 on the Priceline shelf next to the toothpaste.

The result is the rare mass-market reset that pulled price down and finish up at the same time. The 1HR Express Mousse is the formula our editors restock in week six of the panel, the one the Tan team rebuys for itself. Glow Score 9.3 — the highest in the 2026 Self-Tan Index, against thirteen other brands tested.

The supermarket brands don't compete on the same field. Bondi Sands has the distribution but not the undertone; the Pure water-based version (Glow 8.7) is the right fragrance-free fallback if Australian Glow is sold out. Bali Body holds the olive-undertone corner. The two Coles-and-Woolies launches we tested in 2025 (Two Dudes, Le Tan reformulation) didn't make the top five.

What Loving Tan still wins: the cocoa-warm undertone, the biscuit-development scent that says salon-grade, the wedding-day finish. The 2HR Deluxe Mousse at $44.95 from MECCA is the premium icon, and it should stay in your cabinet for the moments that matter. For every other day, the chemist still wins.
