How to prep skin for self-tan.

The 48 hours before tan application matter more than the application itself. Get the prep right and even cheap mass-market mousse looks salon-grade.

Self-tan colour is determined by what your dead cell layer absorbs. Anything that disrupts that layer — fresh shaving, aggressive exfoliation, oil-stripping cleansers, hot showers — affects how DHA reacts and where it concentrates. Prep is the discipline of having a clean, intact, evenly hydrated dead cell layer at the moment of application.

The steps.

Step 1. Two nights before — Full body exfoliation

Use a body scrub or exfoliating mitt in the shower. Focus on the dry zones — knees, elbows, ankles, knuckles — where dead cells build up most. Skip the face if you're tanning body only. Don't exfoliate the day-of: same-day exfoliation strips the barrier and causes uneven DHA absorption.

Step 2. One night before — Shave, wax, or remove unwanted hair

Hair removal disrupts the cell layer in the follicle area. Doing it 24 hours before tan gives skin time to recover. Don't shave or wax the day-of unless absolutely necessary — fresh follicles take up DHA differently and produce dotted patterns.

Step 3. Morning of tan — Shower and dry fully

Quick warm (not hot) shower with a non-stripping body wash. Avoid heavily exfoliating washes (no AHA, no glycolic). Pat dry — don't rub. Skin should be completely dry before tan application; wet skin disperses DHA unevenly.

Step 4. Immediately before — Moisturise dry zones only

Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturiser to knees, elbows, ankles, knuckles, the hairline, and eyebrows. These spots are higher-friction or naturally drier and will otherwise absorb more DHA than surrounding skin. Don't moisturise everywhere — overall moisture diffuses the DHA and lightens the colour.

Step 5. Apply — Clean, room-temperature, dry skin

Cool the room slightly. Apply tan to skin that's neither warm nor cold. Use a quality mitt. Long, light, overlapping strokes. Blend down to extremities with the residual product on the mitt. Wait full develop time before showering.

What to skip when prepping.

Don't use oil-based products in the 24 hours before tan — body oils, oil-based moisturisers, oil cleansers. Oils form a barrier that stops DHA absorption and produces patchy results. Don't use AHA or BHA body washes the day of — they continue to exfoliate after rinsing and lift colour as it develops. Don't apply deodorant before tan — many deodorants react with DHA and turn green. Apply tan first, deodorant after develop.

Frequently asked questions.

How long before self-tan should I exfoliate?
The night before, or two nights before for the most thorough prep. Same-day exfoliation strips the moisture barrier and causes uneven DHA absorption. By overnight your skin returns to normal pH and barrier function.
Can I shave the same day as self-tan?
Avoid it. Fresh shaving produces small openings in the skin that take up DHA differently — often producing a dotted pattern in the tanned area. Shave 24 hours before, not the day of.
Do I need to moisturise before self-tan?
Only the dry zones — knees, elbows, ankles, knuckles, eyebrows. Don't moisturise the full body. Overall moisture diffuses DHA and lightens the result everywhere.
Should I use deodorant before self-tan?
After application, not before. Aluminium-based deodorants can react with DHA and turn green. Apply tan first, let it develop, then apply deodorant.
Can I apply self-tan to wet skin?
No. Wet skin disperses DHA unevenly and produces lighter, patchier results. Skin should be completely dry before application.
What's the best exfoliator for self-tan prep?
An exfoliating mitt with body wash, or a sugar-based scrub (Frank Body, The Body Shop). Avoid coffee-grain scrubs the day before — they're abrasive enough to leave micro-scratches that affect DHA absorption.
Can I tan after waxing?
Yes, but wait 24 hours. Waxing strips the cell layer at the surface and follicle. Tanning immediately after produces uneven and possibly irritated absorption.
Do I need to dry-brush before self-tan?
Optional. Dry-brushing is a lighter exfoliation than scrubs or mitts. Useful if you have very sensitive skin that flares with mechanical exfoliation. Do it the night before, not day-of.
