How to Pluck Eyebrows — The Right Way

Most eyebrow plucking damages future regrowth. The method below shapes brows without thinning them long-term.

The short answer

If you only read one paragraph.

Pluck after a shower (open follicles release easier). Pluck only stray hairs — never above the brow. Use slanted tweezers. Stretch skin taut. Pluck in the direction of growth. Stop and re-evaluate every 5 hairs.

Step by step

The full method.

  1. Pluck after a hot shower. Open follicles release more easily, less skin trauma.
  2. Use a magnifying mirror in natural light. Most over-plucking happens in poor lighting.
  3. Identify the strays first. Hairs below the natural arch and between the brows. Don't touch the top line.
  4. Use slanted tweezers. Tweezerman or slant-tip. Pointed tweezers cause more breakage.
  5. Stretch skin taut, pluck in growth direction. Reduces breakage. Plucking against grain causes ingrown hairs.
  6. Stop every 5 hairs to assess. Most over-plucking is sequential. Step back, look, then continue.
  7. Brush brows up after. Reveals the actual shape. Some hairs are showing what looks like 'extra' but are part of the natural shape.
Common mistakes

What to avoid.

  • Plucking above the brow (the top line should be left alone except by professionals).
  • Plucking against growth direction (causes ingrown hairs).
  • Not stepping back to assess (creates over-thinning quickly).
  • Plucking when stressed (always over-plucks).
  • Using flat-tip tweezers (breaks hairs instead of removing).
Frequently asked

Common questions.

How often should I pluck my brows?

Once weekly at most. Daily plucking causes scarring and uneven regrowth.

Plucking vs threading vs waxing?

Plucking for stray hairs (DIY). Threading for full shape (boutique studio). Waxing for full removal (lasts longer than threading but harsher on skin).

Can I grow back over-plucked brows?

Often yes, with patience and minimal further plucking. Some areas (especially over-plucked tails) take 12+ months. Castor oil and brow serums can help.

How do I know if I'm over-plucking?

If you can't draw a line through the natural growth pattern, you've over-plucked. Stop and let it grow back.
