How to Do Your Eyebrows — Step by Step

The single most-impactful 60 seconds of any makeup routine. Done right, eyebrows lift the entire face. Done wrong, they read as theatre.

The short answer

If you only read one paragraph.

Brush brows up. Fill sparse areas with a pencil one shade lighter than your hair. Set with brow gel. Don't draw the front — feather instead. Always brush after applying.

Step by step

The full method.

  1. Brush brows up with a spoolie. Reveals shape, lifts the face. Most natural-looking step in any routine.
  2. Identify the sparse areas. Map the brow's shape. The middle is usually full; ends and arches need most work.
  3. Use a pencil one shade lighter. Brows tend to look harsh when matched exactly to hair colour. Lighter blends better.
  4. Apply with feathered strokes. Mimic real hair direction. No solid lines.
  5. Brush through with the spoolie after. Blends pencil with real hairs.
  6. Set with brow gel. Tinted (Anastasia Beverly Hills) or clear. Keeps brows in place all day.
  7. Don't fill the front. Modern brows are softer at the front, defined at the arch and tail.
Common mistakes

What to avoid.

  • Filling the brow front (creates a harsh, drawn-on look).
  • Using a pencil too dark (looks unnatural).
  • Solid lines instead of feathered strokes.
  • Skipping the brush-through after applying.
  • Over-defining the arch (creates a permanently surprised look).
Frequently asked

Common questions.

Pencil, powder or gel — which is best?

Pencil for sparse areas; powder for fuller fill; gel to set. Most kits benefit from one of each. Brows-on-the-go = pencil and gel only.

Should I match my hair colour?

One shade lighter, generally. Brows that match exactly look harsh. Exception: if your hair is very dark and you have light brows.

How do I make brows look natural?

Feather strokes (not solid lines). Brush through after. Set with gel. Don't define the front of the brow.

Microblading vs daily makeup?

Microblading lasts 18 months but is hard to fix if done wrong. Daily makeup gives you control but requires 2 minutes daily. Try lamination first if you want lower-maintenance.
