How to build a men's skincare routine.
Most men's skincare guides recommend more products than anyone needs. This one recommends four. They're the four products that deliver the most measurable benefit per dollar and per minute spent.
Men's skin tends to have higher sebum production, larger pore size, and post-shaving irritation considerations — but the active ingredients that drive results work the same as on any skin. The four-step routine below is the foundation. Once it's running consistently for 8+ weeks, you can add more products if you have specific concerns. Most readers don't need to.
The steps.
Step 1. A gentle cleanser
Used twice a day, AM and PM. The job: remove sebum, sweat, and accumulated daytime exposure without stripping the skin barrier. Buy a sulfate-free gel or cream cleanser — Bulldog Original Face Wash ($11) for the affordable tier, La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Cleanser ($30) for sensitive skin, or Frasé Skin Daily Cleanser for the premium tier. Don't buy charcoal or 'detox' cleansers — they tend to be too high-pH and strip combination/dry skin.
Step 2. A daily moisturiser with SPF
Used every morning, regardless of weather. The job: hydration plus daily UV protection. The single most evidence-backed anti-ageing intervention available. Buy a moisturiser-with-SPF combo to keep the routine to four products — La Roche-Posay Anthelios Invisible Fluid SPF 50+ ($35) is the standard. If you want separate moisturiser and SPF, CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion AM ($22) plus Ultra Violette Queen Screen ($45) is the pairing we'd choose.
Step 3. A treatment serum (optional, recommended)
Used PM only if you choose a retinoid; AM only if you choose vitamin C. The job: drive measurable change beyond hydration. For most men, retinol is the highest-value addition — start with The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion ($15) for 8 weeks, then graduate to Medik8 Crystal Retinal 6 ($95) if you want more potency. For users who don't want a retinoid, vitamin C in the AM under SPF (SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic if budget allows) is the strongest alternative.
Step 4. A night moisturiser (optional, conditional)
Only buy a separate night moisturiser if your AM moisturiser doesn't cover overnight needs (typically: drier skin, treatment-active routine that needs buffering, or visible barrier compromise). For most men, the AM moisturiser used PM as well is sufficient. If you do buy a separate night cream, La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair ($38) is the standard; Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Night ($30) if you want retinol-active overnight.
Step 5. What to skip
Eye cream is optional for most men. Toner is unnecessary for most men. Face masks are recreational, not foundational. Exfoliating scrubs cause more problems than they solve — chemical exfoliation via the retinoid in step 3 is sufficient. Anything sold to you on TikTok by a brand you'd never heard of two months ago — wait six months, see if it survives, then evaluate.
Frequently asked questions.
- How long until I see results from a men's skincare routine?
- Hydration and texture improvement: 2–4 weeks. Tone improvement (with retinol): 8–12 weeks. Visible fine-line reduction: 6+ months of consistent use. Anyone selling you faster is overpromising.
- Do I need a separate eye cream?
- Optional for most men. Buy one only if you have a specific concern (depuffing, dark circles, fine lines around the eyes). The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG ($13) is the standard depuffing entry point.
- Can I use the same moisturiser AM and PM?
- Yes, for most men. A lightweight moisturiser-with-SPF used AM works fine PM as well. Buy a separate night cream only if you have specific overnight needs.
- What's the minimum-viable men's routine?
- Cleanser + moisturiser-with-SPF. Two products, AM only, 60 seconds. This is the floor — it's better than nothing and gets the SPF in. From here, add a PM cleanser and a retinoid if you want more measurable results.
- Is Two Dudes a good starter brand?
- Mid-tier. Two Dudes is competent and well-tolerated but not exceptional. The Glow scored the brand 5.5/10 in our six-week testing — the formulations work but other brands in the same price tier perform comparably or better. Read the full Two Dudes review at /reviews/two-dudes.html.
