How to Apply SPF Properly — Most People Get This Wrong

Most SPF use is meaningfully under-dosed. The two-finger rule and the 90-minute reapplication are the difference between SPF 50 and SPF 12.

The short answer

If you only read one paragraph.

Two finger-lengths of SPF for the face. Apply as the last skincare step before makeup. Reapply every 90-120 minutes outdoors, every 2-3 hours indoors. Reapply through makeup with a powder or stick SPF.

Step by step

The full method.

  1. Apply two finger-lengths to the face. Index and middle finger, full length. Most people use a third of this.
  2. Cover face, neck, ears, hands. These age faster than face. Add to the SPF dose.
  3. Apply 15 minutes before sun exposure. SPF needs to absorb to form a protective film.
  4. Reapply every 90-120 minutes outdoors. Most SPF degrades after 90 minutes. 'Once in the morning' is meaningless by lunchtime.
  5. Use a stick or powder for reapplication over makeup. Supergoop Re-Setting Powder or ColoreScience Sunforgettable. Won't disturb foundation.
  6. Don't skip cloudy days. UVA penetrates clouds. UVA is what causes long-term aging and pigmentation.
  7. Use chemical for daily wear, mineral for sensitive skin. Chemical filters (avobenzone, octinoxate) feel lighter. Mineral (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) is gentler but heavier.
Common mistakes

What to avoid.

  • Using a pea-sized amount (under-doses by 70%).
  • Skipping reapplication (SPF degrades after 90 minutes).
  • Believing makeup with SPF replaces SPF (not enough product, not even coverage).
  • Applying SPF before moisturiser absorbs (creates pilling).
  • Skipping cloudy days (UVA penetrates clouds).
Frequently asked

Common questions.

How much SPF do I need for the face?

Two finger-lengths (about 1/4 teaspoon). Two finger-lengths for the body per limb.

Chemical vs mineral SPF?

Chemical absorbs UV (lighter feel). Mineral reflects UV (gentler on sensitive skin). Both are safe; chemical is usually more cosmetically elegant.

Does SPF in makeup count?

No, generally. Makeup SPF is too thin and too uneven to provide the rated protection. Apply SPF underneath, then makeup.

Best SPF for daily wear?

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra-Light Fluid SPF 50+ is the daily-wear benchmark. Light, non-comedogenic, doesn't pill.
