How to apply self-tan without streaks.

Streak-free tan is a method, not a product. The six steps most people skip — and why each one matters.

A streaky self-tan is almost never the product's fault. It's almost always application — specifically, one of six predictable mistakes. Get the method right and even a cheap mousse will produce a natural-looking, even tan. Get the method wrong and Loving Tan at $65 will look just as bad as anything on the chemist shelf.

This is the complete version of the method Glow editors use. It adds 12 minutes to your routine the first time you do it, and about 6 minutes once you're practised.

The method

01.

Exfoliate the night before — not the same day

Use an exfoliating body wash or scrub the night before application. This gives your skin 8–12 hours to stabilise before the DHA hits it.

Same-day exfoliation leaves the skin slightly stripped and causes patchy uptake, especially around elbows, knees, and ankles — the spots that streak most.

02.

Shave at least 24 hours before

Freshly shaved skin has open follicles that cling to DHA and develop darker than the surrounding area. Leave 24 hours between shaving and tanning.

If you must shave the same day, apply the tan to everywhere else first and leave shaved areas for last with a thinner layer.

03.

Moisturise only the dry zones

Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturiser to elbows, knees, ankles, wrists, and the backs of hands. These are the dry zones that soak up extra tan.

Do NOT moisturise the whole body — that dilutes the product and creates patchy uptake. Just the listed dry zones.

04.

Use a mitt. Every time.

A mitt is the single biggest difference-maker in self-tan application. It blends the product evenly and keeps your hands clean.

Apply in long, circular motions — never back-and-forth strokes. Work one limb at a time and blend into the next section before moving on.

05.

Hands and feet last, with a diluted layer

Finish the body first. Then wipe the mitt almost clean on a towel, and with the product left on the mitt, blend the tan over the tops of hands, knuckles, toes, and ankles. Do not add fresh product here.

This diluted final pass prevents the orange-stained-hands look that marks amateur application.

06.

Let it set before dressing

Most products dry in 60 seconds but need 20 minutes before clothing or bedding to avoid transfer. Wear loose dark clothing overnight.

Do not shower for at least 6–8 hours. Longer if the product specifies.

Common questions

Why does my tan streak around my ankles?

Ankles are a dry zone and tend to over-absorb. Pre-moisturise them lightly before application and use the near-clean mitt pass described in Step 5.

Can I use a self-tan without a mitt?

Technically yes. Practically the streak-risk triples. A $5 mitt is the best return on investment in the category.

How long should I leave the mitt on between applications?

Rinse and dry thoroughly between uses. Replace every 2–3 months; they degrade and start to streak.
