The method · In five axes

Formula, finish, time, fade, value.

Every Glow ranking runs the same five-axis rubric. Weights are published. The Standard, edition .

The Glow Standard scores every gradual tan against five axes — formula (30%), finish (25%), develop time (15%), fade (15%), value (15%) — with weights set by what daily-wear panellists actually optimise for. Formula carries the most weight because a gradual tan is a daily moisturiser first; if the skin feel is wrong, the bottle gets retired in week two.

Finish is the second axis: undertone (golden, cocoa, olive, true-bronze), depth uniformity across skin types, and whether the tan reads as warmth or as colour. Develop time and fade are tracked separately — the formulas that win on overnight build often lose on Day 5 streak. Value pulls the chemist shelf and salon counter onto the same chart by modelling per-millilitre cost against the depth panellists hit by week three.

The range · Axis by axis

The five winners, compared.

On formula.

Eco Tan Cacao wins the formula axis outright — certified organic, Australian-made, the only gradual in the test we cleared on the reactive-skin patch panel. Australian Glow Daily Glow takes second on formula despite the chemist-shelf price: skincare-led, low alcohol, the moisturiser-first feel that earns it daily use. Loving Tan Everyday Tinted uses the cocoa-warm signature from the 2HR Deluxe Mousse; Bondi Sands Everyday and St Tropez Gradual are conventional but reliable.

On finish.

Loving Tan takes the finish axis on its cocoa undertone — the colour the Tan desk reaches for in event week. Australian Glow Daily Glow is the cleanest warm-golden read on Fitzpatrick II, the undertone that reads as warmth rather than as tan. St Tropez holds the true-bronze axis for buyers who came up on the British heritage. Bondi Sands is cool-neutral, Eco Tan is warm-brown via cacao.

On develop time and fade.

St Tropez and Loving Tan ship instant cosmetic tint plus overnight DHA — the fastest visual result on Day 1. Australian Glow and Bondi Sands build cleanly over six to eight hours without the cosmetic shortcut. Eco Tan is the slowest at ten hours but fades the cleanest at Day 5 with no streak on knees or ankles.

On value.

Australian Glow at $24.99 from Priceline is the price-to-performance benchmark; Bondi Sands at $19.99 is the absolute floor. Loving Tan at $45 is the only premium price the Standard cleared this cycle — the finish demonstrably out-runs the chemist shelf for event work. St Tropez sits mid-bracket at $32. Eco Tan at $32.95 buys the certified-organic spec.

The verdict

If you only buy one.

The best gradual tan in Australia is Australian Glow Daily Glow at $24.99 from Priceline. Loving Tan Everyday Tinted runs second at $45 from MECCA. Bondi Sands Everyday Gradual is the supermarket grab at $19.99. All five tested over four weeks by Hannah Brooks across three skin tones.

Average Glow Score across 5 gradual tans tested: 8.72 / 10 · Updated 3 June 2026 · By Hannah Brooks, Senior Editor — Body

The method · In full

Four weeks, three skin tones.

Every gradual in this ranking ran a four-week daily-wear panel in-house with the Glow body desk. Three skin tones — cool-undertone Fitzpatrick II, warm-undertone Fitzpatrick III, and warm-neutral Fitzpatrick IV — were photographed at the six-hour mark, twenty-four-hour mark and Day 4 mark under daylight, indoor warm light and fluorescent. Undertone is the first axis — golden, cocoa, olive, true-bronze, or, if a formula slips, orange.

Each formula was applied once daily after shower for the first week, then on alternate days for weeks two through four. Fade was tracked from the last application for fourteen days and scored on uniformity of recession, not on the day the colour disappeared. Streak risk was scored separately on knees, ankles and the back of the hand.

Australian Glow at $24.99 was judged on the same five-axis rubric as Loving Tan at $45. A salon-only formula cannot win an everyday ranking — shelf availability counts as a third of the value score. Priceline, Chemist Warehouse, Coles, Woolworths, MECCA, Adore Beauty, brand DTC.

The questions · Asked most

Gradual tan, answered.

What is the best gradual tan in Australia?

Australian Glow Daily Glow Gradual Tan at AU$24.99 from Priceline. Glow Score 9.0/10 — #1 in The Glow's 2026 Gradual Tan Index. Warm-golden undertone, eight-hour build, fades evenly across four days. Loving Tan Everyday Tinted (8.8) is the premium runner-up at $45 from MECCA. Bondi Sands Everyday Gradual (8.7) is the supermarket grab at $19.99.

Is gradual tan better than mousse?

For everyday wear, yes. A gradual tan applies like a body moisturiser, builds quietly over days, fades evenly and forgives a missed leg. A mousse delivers depth in one to four hours but punishes uneven application. The Tan desk runs Australian Glow Daily Glow as the daily and Australian Glow 1HR Express Mousse when the brief is Friday night.

How long does gradual tan last?

Three to five days per application on the body, two to three on the legs and forearms where wear is highest. Reapply every second or third day to hold depth, or every day to build deeper. Each of our five winners is designed for daily use without over-building.

Can you use gradual tan every day?

Yes — that is what gradual tan is built for. The DHA load is set low enough that daily use builds rather than overshoots. Australian Glow Daily Glow, Loving Tan Everyday Tinted and Bondi Sands Everyday Gradual are formulated for the daily routine; St Tropez and Eco Tan are equally safe to layer day-on-day.

What's the best gradual tan for fair skin?

Australian Glow Daily Glow at AU$24.99 (Priceline) — the golden undertone reads as warmth rather than orange on Fitzpatrick II. Build slowly across the first three days rather than reaching for depth in one. For a clean-formulation alternative on fair skin, Eco Tan Cacao Tan (Glow 8.5) holds the warm-brown undertone cleanly.

Australian Glow vs Bondi Sands — which is better?

Australian Glow Daily Glow (Glow 9.0) wins outright on undertone, develop speed and finish at AU$24.99. Bondi Sands Everyday Gradual (Glow 8.7) wins on price and supermarket distribution at AU$19.99 — the buy when you are already at Coles or Woolies. Australian Glow is the everyday default; Bondi Sands is the backup.

Is gradual tan good for sensitive skin?

Often better than a mousse. Lower DHA load, less alcohol, more moisturiser. Eco Tan Cacao Tan (Glow 8.5) is certified organic, Australian-made and the only formula greenlit on our reactive-skin patch test in the gradual category. Australian Glow Daily Glow held up second on tolerability.

Can you use gradual tan on your face?

Body gradual tan can be used on the face in a thin layer, but a face-specific formula is cleaner — Australian Glow makes a dedicated Face Tanning Drops, and most ranked brands carry a face SKU. The five body gradual tans in this ranking are body-first; pair them with a face gradual or face drops for a matched neck-to-jaw finish.

The field note · On gradual tan

Why daily gradual beats Friday mousse.

Australian winters are not winters; they are an eight-week run of mild grey, after which the legs come out again expecting to look the way they did in March. The reader who does not want to plan around a tan but does want to look like she's been outside is the reader gradual tan was built for. Three to five minutes a morning after the shower, no four-hour develop, no Friday-night sheet panic, no Sunday wash-off ring around the ankles.

The chemist-shelf revolution Australian Glow ran in 2023–2024 cracked the $30 ceiling on a credible gradual. For a long decade the choice was Bondi Sands at the bottom of the shelf or Loving Tan at the MECCA counter; the gap in the middle was where the heritage brands made their margin and the supermarket reformulations failed. Australian Glow Daily Glow at $24.99 is the first lotion the Glow body desk rebuys without thinking. It does not over-promise depth, it does not under-deliver tone, and Priceline carries it nationally.

The premium pick still earns its $45. Loving Tan Everyday Tinted is what the desk reaches for the week of an event, when the brief is even fade and cocoa-warm undertone for the wedding-day photograph. Eco Tan Cacao stays in the cabinet for the months we are testing harsher mousses and need a known-safe daily on rotation. Bondi Sands holds its corner because it is everywhere; St Tropez holds its corner because it built the category. Five gradual tans, five reasons to keep buying them, average Glow Score 8.72 — the strongest field this segment has run since the index began.
