Charlotte Tilbury

The makeup artist who built a billion-pound brand on one shade of lipstick.

Pillow Talk Lipstick. Hollywood Flawless Filter. Magic Cream. Three product hits, one decade. Stocked at MECCA, David Jones, Sephora and DTC.

The brand

From makeup-artist secret to mass-market staple.

Founded 2013 in London by celebrity makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury DBE — the products she'd been using backstage for two decades, finally in a bottle.

The brand sells the artist’s tradecraft. Pillow Talk was the my-lips-but-better shade Charlotte had been mixing on set for clients including Kate Moss and Penelope Cruz. Hollywood Flawless Filter was the soft-focus base trick. Magic Cream was the rich pre-makeup moisturiser her face needed to sit on. Each launched as a product. Each became a category.

Puig — the Spanish luxury group behind Rabanne and Carolina Herrera — acquired a majority stake in 2020. Charlotte stayed as Founder and Chief Creative Officer. The brand voice didn’t move. The product hits kept coming.

The campaign moment

Hollywood, on a Tuesday.

Charlotte Tilbury sells a fantasy — old-Hollywood glamour, soft-focus skin, rose-gold packaging — without making the buyer feel they need to live there. The product does the work. The campaign sets the mood.

The product instinct

One artist, three category-defining launches.

Most prestige brands launch products. Charlotte Tilbury launches categories. Pillow Talk turned nude-pink lipstick into a global default. Hollywood Flawless Filter invented the primer/highlighter hybrid the entire industry now copies. Magic Cream gave makeup artists a moisturiser engineered for base to sit on, and built a £100m skincare arm around it. Three hits in a decade is the rate that built the £1bn valuation.

FAQ

The six questions editors get asked.

Is Pillow Talk worth the hype?
Yes — and it’s the one Charlotte Tilbury product we’d buy first. A my-lips-but-better nude-pink that flatters almost every undertone. It built the brand for a reason. From AU$56 at MECCA.
What is Hollywood Flawless Filter actually for?
A primer/highlighter hybrid. Mix two drops into foundation for soft-focus glow, layer under base as a luminous primer, or tap onto high points over makeup as a liquid highlight. The most flexible single product in makeup.
Is Magic Cream worth AU$105?
For the makeup-artist crowd who built rituals around skin prep, yes. It’s a rich, fragranced moisturiser engineered for makeup to sit on. As pure skincare it’s lighter on actives than the price suggests — buy it for the prep, not the long-term skin gains.
Where is it stocked in Australia?
MECCA nationally is the dominant prestige stockist. Also David Jones, Sephora, and direct at charlottetilbury.com.au. MECCA carries the full range plus a handful of exclusives.
Who owns Charlotte Tilbury?
Spanish luxury group Puig acquired a majority stake in 2020. Charlotte Tilbury DBE remains Founder and Chief Creative Officer. The brand voice and product direction stayed founder-led through the transition.
What’s the best Charlotte Tilbury skincare?
Magic Cream is the gateway and the most famous, but Magic Serum Crystal Elixir is the better-formulated buy if you want active skincare from the brand. For pure routine-quality, Charlotte Tilbury sits below dedicated skincare houses like Augustinus Bader or SkinCeuticals.
