What is retinol?

The most evidence-backed anti-ageing active on earth. What it is, what it does, and which Australian formulas deserve the shelf space.

Retinol is a form of vitamin A that converts in the skin to retinoic acid — the active form that triggers skin cell turnover, collagen production, and pigmentation regulation.

It's the single most-studied anti-ageing topical active, with decades of peer-reviewed research backing claims on wrinkles, pigmentation, texture, and acne.

Results take 12-16 weeks of consistent use. The first 2-4 weeks can include mild 'retinisation' — flakiness, sensitivity, initial worsening before improvement.

The method

01.

Start at the right concentration

0.2-0.3% if sensitive; 0.5% if normal; 1% only once tolerated.

Start twice weekly for 2 weeks. Then every other day. Then daily if tolerated.

02.

Apply at night, after cleansing

Pea-sized amount spread across face. Apply to dry skin (wet skin amplifies absorption and irritation).

Follow with moisturiser. Consider a 'buffer' — applying moisturiser first — if extremely sensitive.

03.

Never mix with vitamin C or AHA/BHA

Retinol at night. Vitamin C in morning. Exfoliating acids on non-retinol nights.

Mixing in same routine reduces efficacy and increases irritation.

04.

Non-negotiable: daily SPF

Retinol thins the stratum corneum, making skin more photo-sensitive.

Without daily SPF, retinol accelerates sun damage rather than preventing it.
