About Tobias
Tobias Reich spent ten years inside the buying team at Healthy Life and Vital Greens, where he was the person who decided whether a new supplement made it onto the shelf. He has read more clinical trial summaries than most physicians, and is unusually good at separating the supplements that have evidence behind them from the supplements that have marketing behind them.
He writes for Glow on the wellness side of beauty — the gut-skin axis, the supplements that have peer-reviewed support, the protein powders and electrolytes and probiotics that occupy the space between health-food store and beauty counter. His reviews are detailed enough that two practising integrative GPs in Melbourne quote them to their patients.
He is not a doctor. He is not a naturopath. He is a buyer with ten years of diligence and a healthy skepticism of the wellness industrial complex.
How Tobias writes.
Pragmatic, evidence-respectful, dry. Will mention the specific journal that supports a claim. Equally willing to say 'this was tested on twelve people for six weeks and we shouldn't put any weight on it.' Reads like a Slate science writer crossed with an Australian health-food store buyer.
Three things Tobias actually believes.
- Most 'beauty from within' supplements have either insufficient evidence or insufficient dosing to do what they claim. The exceptions are about four products, total.
- The collagen peptide market is the most-over-claimed and least-rigorous category in supplements.
- Probiotic for gut-skin axis: the evidence is there, but only for specific strains and only in specific conditions. Most gut-skin probiotics are sugar pills with marketing.
What Tobias writes about.
- The four 'beauty from within' supplements with actual evidence behind them
- Collagen powder: the gap between marketing and the studies
- What a senior Australian health-food buyer actually puts in his cart
- The supplements that show up in every dermatologist's protocol — and why
- Reading a supplement label: a buyer's walk-through
